History of AutoCAD
AutoCAD is available for PCs running Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. Additionally, AutoCAD LT is a web-based version of the software designed for use on iOS and Android mobile devices. AutoCAD is the most widely used commercial drafting software in the world, and has achieved that position by maintaining both a reputation of being a high-quality, easy to use drafting program, as well as a robust feature set.
Autodesk, Inc. is a worldwide designer, developer, and marketer of software tools used by design professionals to create, visualize, simulate, and document their designs. Founded in 1982, Autodesk is based in San Rafael, California. Autodesk acquired the French-based product CAD Manager in 2004.
Autodesk was founded in 1982 by a group of French aerospace industry professionals, including Jean-Claude Darlay, Jean-Claude Collet, and Jacques Gachot. Autodesk has its headquarters in San Rafael, California, but also maintains offices in London, Paris, Los Angeles, Beijing, Bangalore, Dublin, Taipei, Shanghai, Tokyo, and Hong Kong. The company also has a design studio in San Francisco.
Autodesk released AutoCAD, a computer-aided design program, in December 1982. Originally called Drafting System, the program was developed as a tool for use by Autodesk’s staff of industrial design engineers, who were tasked with drafting solutions for client drawings, including proposals for product features and strategies. At the time of AutoCAD’s release, the program was not intended to be commercialized, but Autodesk provided the source code to CAD Manager for free to all other design professionals. CAD Manager was designed to work with AutoCAD to facilitate group work, and remained open-source for several years. The first version of AutoCAD was released in 1982.
AutoCAD began as a DOS-based application. Version 1.0 was released in December 1982, with the first native Macintosh version released in 1984. In 1987, Autodesk released a Windows version, and in 1998 the company acquired the company that produced the first version of AutoCAD for Linux.
In the early 1990s, the company began to sell licenses to other companies, including Symbol (now part of Autodesk). In 1994, Autodes

BIM (Building Information Model) and BIM360 are extensions to CIM (Construction Information Model) for Building Information Modeling (BIM), which is a Unified Modeling Language (UML)-based toolset for the interchange of 3D models used for the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and disposal of buildings. It is used to describe and exchange information about the assets (means of transportation, plants, vehicles, etc.) related to the building.
AutoCAD allows the creation of parametric formulas which are created in the programming languages listed above and are implemented through the use of AutoLISP or Visual LISP. There are also 3rd party add-on packages for creating more advanced objects, such as:
AutoCAD plugins for the modeling applications SketchUp and Rhino
AutoCAD plugins for the vector graphics packages Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW and Indesign
File formats can be imported and exported from AutoCAD. These are listed below.
There are several types of files that are associated with the Autodesk Exchange Stores:
AutoCAD DGN Files (DWG)
AutoCAD DWG Files (DWG)
3D Studio Max
There are several architectural packages built on AutoCAD Architecture which are listed below. They are:
The following architectural packages are no longer maintained by Autodesk and are no longer supported:
AutoCAD Architecture 2D
AutoCAD Architecture 3D
AutoCAD Architecture 2008
AutoCAD Architecture 2009
AutoCAD Architecture 2010
AutoCAD Architecture 2011
AutoCAD Architecture 2012
BIM was originally released in October 2004, and was the first CAD application to use the BIM specification.
There are two main types of BIM software:
Autodesk Revit has a free to use model called Revit Architecture, which was originally based on Autodesk Architect, but since Autodesk released Revit Architecture in 2012 it has been a standalone product.
The BIM standard was originally based on the Civil 3D CAD standard

Porting a Java desktop app to WPF
I’ve been learning WPF recently and I’m having some difficulties with regards to existing Java desktop apps and porting them to WPF.
I’m fairly new to the Java platform and WPF, so please forgive me for my lack of understanding. What I’m trying to do is find the best way to migrate from a Swing app to a WPF app. I’m really interested in keeping the look and feel of the app as much as possible, but with WPF, I’m not sure how to go about doing this. I’ve been reading a lot about Silverlight and other ways of doing this but WPF is what I want to use if possible.
I’m thinking of starting with a Java app and just replacing the Swing controls with WPF controls, then from there, if I can get it to work, perhaps I could start converting to a

Developed by Codenvy and Autodesk, the Autodesk® AutoCAD® 2023 Beta includes new and improved usability features for you to take your digital design process to the next level. From intuitive usability and a new method of viewing the drawing, to the ability to instantly import annotations from the new Stamp and Keep feature, the new beta version of AutoCAD 2023 delivers on every level.
Use the entity components to create reusable objects that can be edited and modified.
The user interface was redesigned to give you a better view of your drawing. The interface was simplified to only display information needed. For example, you can access Drawing Preferences from the interface.
The Lock and Lock in Progress commands are now listed in the Draw toolbar.
Use the Touch-Down command to move into a new drawing.
Using the Shape-based Entities interface.
The new “Shape-based Entities” option lets you work with model components in the drawing as if they were traditional entities.
Preview your drawing in a new “Preview” view, so you can view changes instantly. For example, with the Stamp command you can change parts of your drawing in real time, including the colors, dimensions, and attributes.
Access some new features from the new Open Doors command. For example, you can now select any number of previous drawings and open them in the same drawing.
Open new panorama views to see your drawing at a high level, and change between views with a single click.
The Plot Thickness command.
See the new Plot Thickness command for plotting and stacking to give your drawings more depth. You can also view the entire plot in the drawing space and compare thicknesses between views.
Using Cross Section 2D views.
Use the new Cross Section 2D views to see how a 3D model would look on a 2D page. For example, you can choose how far apart you want the slices to be, and you can choose the scaling and other preferences.
Use the new Windows option to preview the drawing as it would appear in a regular window
